Founder of Sabar Dairy

Late Shri Bhurabhai Patel

Late Shri Bhurabhai Khodabhai Patel, a farmer from Prantij taluka of Sabarkantha district was a great visionary. He had a dream of forming a milk cooperative society with other farmers, who were the victims of exploitation by the private milk suppliers and milk contractors in that time. He then with the guidance and advice of Dr Varghese Kurien formed a milk cooperative society and started collecting and supplying the milk to the municipal dairy at Ahmedabad. The first such 20 societies were formed in different villages of Prantij taluka. It was a turning point for the milk producers and gradually formation of milk producer co-operative

societies was started. As more and more farmers came together in support of the movement the need for a large scale milk processing facility was felt as the Municipal Dairy at Ahmedabad, being a consumer oriented dairy, could not accept all the milk procured from the district, and to process the milk by its own, a milk processing dairy called the Sabarkantha District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Limited (Sabar Dairy) was taken birth.
